Sri Lanka was known in the past as Taprobane, Ophir, Serendib, Ceylon etc. for her pristine attributes. According to ancient literature it was known as Heladiva. And now ‘Sri’ means ‘Reverence’ or ‘Scared’, since the advent of Buddhism in the island whilst ‘Lanka’ is a derivative from ‘Alankara’ meaning beautiful. This is synonymous considering the cute appearance and the natural beauty which she is proud of. Golden sun soaked sandy stretches of beaches at the periphery and lush green mountains bear proof for this. In fact it is also called the ‘Pearl of the Indian Ocean’.

This enticing landmass although very small in size, woos hundred thousands each year with its one of the most hospitable demeanor in the world. Every connoisseur of food would certify the richness of a wide range of delectable variety of gourmet and the expertise the country is proud of. Cultural and religious diversity is another hallmark of this adorable island. A haven for major religions such as Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity and Islam keeps a pious visitor ‘at home’. Sinhala is the language spoken by the majority here. However Tamil too is widely spoken while English holds the key as the link language which is also reckoned as the business language. Being one of the most literate countries in Asia and this is a great asset for any tourist.

Tea reigns as the National Beverage and is the largest income generator for the island. Ceylon Tea as it is branded is known as the best around the globe. Also, edible fruit varieties are in plenty. Open market economy has facilitated many an imported good which have flooded into local bazaars. Travelling within has been conveniently structured providing exciting excursions into the urban as well as the wild, whilst communication with the world outside is never mind boggling since, Sri Lanka has established the needed infrastructure for this purpose.
