Sri Lanka was known in the past as Taprobane, Ophir, Serendib, Ceylon etc. for her pristine attributes. According to ancient literature it was known as Heladiva. And now ‘Sri’ means ‘Reverence’ or ‘Scared’, since the advent of Buddhism in the island whilst ‘Lanka’ is a derivative from ‘Alankara’ meaning beautiful. This is synonymous considering the cute appearance and the natural beauty which she is proud of. Golden sun soaked sandy stretches of beaches at the periphery and lush green mountains bear proof for this. In fact it is also called the ‘Pearl of the Indian Ocean’.
