In 1943, Women s National Education Society (WNES) took over the management from the theosophical Society, and the school entered a new era of rapid progress, bringing into its ambit, a higher secondary school, a pre university college and a co- education evening degree college. In June 1977 , was born Besant Women s College.
Founded by the great philanthropist and visionary, the Late Manel Srinivas Nayak, the then president of WNES. While his foresight and initiative played a pivotal role in the establishment of the college , the active leadership provided by his successors, the late B. Damodar Prabhu and the late Manel Krishna Nayak has enabled our college to register unprecedented growth. Now Sri Kudupi Jagadish Shenoy as the president and Sri B Mohan Nayak as the correspondent ably supported by distinguished members of the Managing Committee , the Principal, Dr. Manjula K.T and her band of dedicated staff. Loyal and Disciplined students, work in perfect harmony for a common cause- women s welfare through education.
Since its inception , the inception , the Institution has been striving hard to bring higher education within the reach of all girls who seek it .especially those who are economically and socially backward, so that the noble ideals of Dr.Annie Besant are kept alive in the hearts and minds of the women of this district.Ours is the one of the very few colleges in the district exclusively for women. We make every effort to mould and strengthen the character of our students through education , which is liberal enough to absorb new trends and ideas but is rooted in the time honored traditional and cultural values can make them competent to face the challenges of the present day world. In our choice of subjects , we make an attempt to strike a balance between , the two major feminine concerns of home and career, with a judicious mix of subjects like Secretarial Practice , Computer Science, Data processing, Journalism, Home Science on the one hand and the Traditional subjects like Economics, Political Science, Sociology, History, English and Kannada as electives on the other, The growing importance of computer education for a coveted career option prompted the introduction of B.Sc with Computer Science.,Mathematics and Statistics, thus adding a new dimension to the curriculum in Besant Women s College .With the introduction of B.B.M and B.Sc in Food , Nutrition and dietetics in the academic year 2007-2008, there has been an increase in the options available to the students.
Over the years, the college has attained the distinction of having produced students of higher academic proficiency and excellent all round performance, most notably in athletics, where our students have recorded meritorious performance both at the national and international level. The College which has completed thirty years is still young and energetic- young enough to dream and plan for a better future and energetic enough to translate the dream to reality. In a country still plagued by illiteracy and atrocities against women, the college is fully geared up to ensure their options in life, through the most effective means a balanced choice of subjects, ranging from the traditional to the modern , from the conservative to the progressive , to the diverse needs, aptitudes, talents and interest.
The present management is committed to preserving the priceless legacy of the Besant Institutions, and is constantly enlarging its reach to touch society in new ways. A recent addition to the WNES fold is the Besant Vidya Kendra, a co-educational management school affiliated to Mangalore University , which offers a two year MBA course.
The Besant Institutions are bound to scale new heights of achievements in the years to come, for they cherish the noble ideal that students should be helped to develop a liberal and progressive outlook, adding a new dimension to their natural, national heritage of cultural and moral values.
