In addition to preparing patients and monitoring dialysis treatment, dialysis technicians also prepare post treatment reports. They also work on protocols for equipment evaluation and training materials for patients and staff. Dialysis technicians generally work under a physician or nurse's supervision, usually in a hospital, clinic or home-dialysis program.

6 months internship Do you want to pursue Dialysis Technology course right after 12th standard? If yes, this article will be of help to you. In this article, Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) Dialysis Technology courses have been discussed in detail. 12th passed students, who want to pursue this allied healthcare professional course, may make use of this article. The article covers topics like course details, duration, eligibility criteria, admission process, syllabus, career prospects and salary details.
Dialysis
What is dialysis technology, what is this course all about? Who is a dialysis technician, what are his/her tasks? What is it like to be a dialysis technician or supervisor? You will find answers to these questions in the coming paragraphs.
DIALYSIS TECHNOLOGY: BASIC DETAILS
In a healthy human body, kidneys are responsible for purifying the blood. As long as kidneys perform this task well, there is no need for a patient to use dialysis treatment.
Due to reasons such as kidney failure and certain medical conditions (damaged kidneys and other diseases), kidneys become unable to carry out this purification process. This is when dialysis process comes handy!
When natural purification of blood (by kidneys) stops, it becomes necessary to intervene and perform artificial purification.
Dialysis is the artificial purification process of blood. Using dialysis process, it is possible to remove waste, excess of water and other unwanted fluid from the blood of patients.
In modern hospitals and clinics offering dialysis treatment, hemodialysis machines are used to perform artificial purification process. A dialysis technician is a person who has been trained to operate the hemodialysis machine and carry out pre, intra and post dialysis procedures.
Let us check out the tasks of a dialysis technician-
TASKS OF A DIALYSIS TECHNICIAN
Setting up dialysis machine
Preparing sterilization mix
Recording vital body stats of the patient (temperature, blood pressure, age, pulse rate and weight)
Monitoring the patient
Guiding the patient and communicating with him/her
Administering anaesthesia (as per requirement)
Operate dialysis machine
Supervise dialysis process
Calculating blood flow
Cleaning and inspection of dialysis machine
In short, when it comes to dialysis technology course, students are trained to operate dialysis equipment, inspect and maintain it. Other than technical training, subjects like human anatomy and physiology, renal diseases, other relevant diseases, blood chemistry etc are also covered in this course.
After completing the course, dialysis technicians may work under the supervision of specialized Doctors and Nurses at hospitals or healthcare setups offering dialysis treatment.

COURSES
Some of the well known B.Sc. Dialysis Technology courses available in India are-
B.Sc. in Dialysis Technology
B.Sc. in Dialysis Therapy
B.Sc. in Renal Dialysis Technology
DURATION, ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA, ADMISSION PROCESS & PG COURSES
Basic course details: The above mentioned courses are undergraduate level Bachelor of Science Degree courses.
Duration: 3 years. In cases of some institutes, academic program is followed by an internship stint.
Eligibility criteria: 10+2 Science stream passed (with Physics, Chemistry and Biology subjects) from a recognized board. Minimum aggregate marks required (if criteria exists) is generally around 45-55% marks.
Admission process: Most institutes follow the merit based admission process. Marks scored by students in board examination and/or relevant entrance test (state-wise or institute-wise) are taken into account. Seats are allotted to deserving candidates on the basis of merit marks.
PG courses and further studies: B.Sc. graduates may go for relevant Master s course (M.Sc.) or PG Diploma course. Some such Master s courses include- M.Sc. in Dialysis Technology, M.Sc. in Renal Replacement Therapy and Dialysis Technology, M.Sc. in Renal Science and Dialysis Technology and M.Sc. in Dialysis Therapy.
M.Sc. course lasts for a period of 2 years. PG Diploma course generally lasts for 1 year.
ALTERNATIVE COURSES
If you are unable to get admission in B.Sc. program, there also exist Diploma and certification courses. Though Diploma and certificate courses are not as valued as their B.Sc. counterparts, these courses can be used to acquire basic dialysis technician skills. Such courses will help one land entry level jobs!
Diploma in Dialysis Technology, Medical certificate in Dialysis Technician and Diploma in Dialysis Technician are some of the notable courses belonging to these categories.
