The present temple was built by the Gorkha Commander in 18th century. It is a beautiful white marble temple decorated by the snow capped Himalayan peaks and lot of devotees. The Temple has a great history and it is believed that the king Bhagirathi did serious penance to impress the goddess Ganga for salvation of this ancestors. After 1000 years penance King Bhagirathi was able to agree Goddess Ganga to appear on the earth. Lord Shiva was know the earth is not able to bear the force of Ganga water then he was agree to lock Goddess Ganga in his luscious to save the mankind. During the winters the idol of Goddess Ganga is kept in the Mukhwa Village for next six months because Mukhwa is the winter seat of Goddess Ganga.

Gaumukh Glacier is one of the other major attractions here and the major source of River Bhagirathi which is situated at a distance of 18 km from Gangotri temple. It means cow s face which is one of major attraction of the place. The Glacier is offered the best 18 km trekking route that is attract thousands of the tourists. The trekking to Gaumukh is easy but it goes through a rocky surface. Apart from Gaumukh glacier there are lots of visiting places like - Kedar Tal, Dodi Tal, Jalmagan Shivlinga, Harsil and Surya Kund, Dharali, Bhojbasa, Gangnani etc are add the charm which makes the destination perfect. Apart from this it is a perfect destination for adventure activities like Trekking and Gomukh Tapovan is one of the best trekking routes known as a paradise for adventure lovers.
