The Azerbaijan Medical University currently hosts a diverse international student body, with 1,200 students from 21 different countries. Among them, over 200 Indian students have been studying at the university for the past six years. However, these numbers are relatively low compared to other destinations where Indian students pursue MBBS degrees abroad.
The medical education system in Azerbaijan offers a six-year MBBS program, which includes clinical rotations as an integral component. The program is available in three languages: English, Russian, and Azerbaijani. Students from Asian countries like India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka typically opt for the English-taught program, while students from Central Asian countries such as Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan may choose the Russian-taught program. Native students from Uzbekistan often enroll in the Azerbaijani program.
Unlike some other countries in the region, Azerbaijan does not adhere to the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS). Instead, it follows its own educational system. This diversity in language options and educational systems allows students from various backgrounds to pursue their medical education at Azerbaijan Medical University.
