Engineering Drawing made easy
Teaching the concepts of Engineering Drawing to students has always been a challenging task for the teachers. In order to counter the issue, Sunil Khabia of NRI college has come with the concept of teaching ED with the help of digital techniques which includes 3-D model presentations on projector and video clippings.
It is very difficult to explain and teaching the three dimensional concepts of orthographic projection, isometric projection and perspective projection by conventional methods.
Students with less visualization ability find great difficulty in understanding the three dimensional concepts, necessary for understanding of the subject, "senior faculty of NRI College Khabia said.
Talking about the concept, he said: "My tools for teaching engineering drawing include animated power point presentations, three dimensional models developed on projector and others"
Citing disadvantages of conventional teaching in the ED, he said: "In engineering drawing we need to describe the shape and size of the object. In the conventional teaching methods, teachers mostly use board and marker which makes it difficult for him to explain the three dimensional concepts of projections comprehensively. Teachers have to show models every time by holding them in hand," Khabia claimed.
Khabia added that with minimum writing work, he has been able to concentrate on every student. "Grasping power of students are not same. Few pick quickly while others take time to understand the concept. By showing them graphs, animations and models, it would be easier for students to learn the concept, " he added.
Khabia claimed that it took several years to make videos and animations of ED. "I had to make animations of every topic of the engineering drawing which has a cumbersome process. However, I am happy after successfully implementing the concept," Khabia said. His paper on engineering teaching made easy by the use of the latest educational technology was lauded at the international conference organized earlier this year in Kerela.
