At that point, experts didn t yet know the extent to which individuals with COVID-19 could spread the virus before symptoms appeared. Nor was it known that some people have COVID-19 but do not have any symptoms. Unknowingly, both groups can spread it to each other and others. These discoveries led the U.S. Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to try and do an about-face on face masks. The CDC updated its guidance to recommend widespread use of easy cloth face coverings to assist prevent transmission of the virus by those that have COVID-19 but do not know it.
