River Ganga is called Bhagirathi and attains the name Ganga from Devprayag where Bhagirathi meets Alaknanda. The present temple was established by a Gorkha Commander Amar Singh Thapa in 18th century.

Every year the temple opens on the auspicious day of Akshay Tritiya which fall in the last week of April or first week of May and closes after two days of Diwali on the day of Bhai Duj. May to June is the beast time to take part in the yatra and again September to till Diwali is best time to visit. From July to August monsoon take place here with heavy rainfall. Winters are harsh here and snowfall starts here from December to till February. Don t forget to carry heavy woolen clothes during yatra. Mukhwa is the winter seat of Goddess Ganga. During the winters when the roads blocked due to heavy snowfall then the idol brought down to Mukhwa village for next six months and worshiped.

Visiting places in and around Gangotri
Gangotri Temple: It is one of Chardham and the highest temple of Goddess Ganga. River Bhagirathi increased the charm of the place and the place holds great importance among Hindu Devotees.
Bhairon Ghati: It is situated at a distance of 10 km from Gangotri located near confluence of Jat Ganga and Bhagirathi River.
Underwater Shivaling: This Shivaling made from natural rock is submerged under water which is easily visible during winters. It is said that this is the place where Lord Shiva locks Goddess Ganga in his hair.
Gaumukh and Tapovan: Gaumukh is known as the Birth place of Ganges. It is offered the best trekking route around the Peaks. Further trek towards Tapovan situated at a distance if 14 km from Gaumukh.
