Kushinagar is the centre of the Buddhist circuit, which consists of pilgrimage sites at Lumbini, Sarnath, and Gaya. The Buddhist circuit has four international and two domestic airports. The international circuit spanning over India and Nepal included Lumbini (place of birth), Bodh Gaya (place of enlightenment), Sarnath (place of first preaching) and Kushinagar place of death).
Bodh Gaya: (in the current Mahabodhi Temple, Bihar, India), is the most important religious site and place of pilgrimage, the Mahabodhi Temple houses what is believed to be the Bodhi Tree where Prince Siddh rtha attained enlightenment (Nibbana) and became known as Gautama Buddha.
Buddha himself mentioned the four most important places for the Buddhist 'Dharma Yatra' - Lumbini, where he was born, Bodhgaya, where he gained enlightenment, Sarnath, where he preached his first sermon, and Kushinagar, where he achieved Mahaparinirvana.
The purpose of pilgrimage is to foster a spiritual discipline, to fulfil a vow or simply to travel. It is an important Buddhist practice. Pilgrimage also helps to express feelings of devotion and creates a relationship with the historical figures associated with the pilgrimage site.
