The government's flagship scheme Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) has received good response from Indian residents. This Credit Linked Subsidy Scheme (CLSS) is categorised as urban and rural as well on the basis of annual income level to provide applicable benefits of subsidy on interest rates on home loans accordingly.
While those with annual income less than Rs 18 lakh per annum can apply for the "Housing for All by 2022" scheme (the eligibility criteria varies as per specified category), only a limited number of applications that get approved each year by the government.

The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban or PMAY-U is centered on housing loan for the urban poor with varied rules for categories based on annual income. There is an EWS (Economically Weaker Section) category, MIG-I (Middle Income Group I) category and MIG-II category.

The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin or PMAY-G, previously known as Indira Awaas Yojana, is meant for the rural poor families looking to build their first pucca house.
