Gastrointestinal tract tumours or carcinoid tumours are cancers that develop slowly in the hormone yielding cells of the intestines. These often called cancers in slow motion can take several years to develop without any traces of symptoms. 1% of the GI tract cancers and 50% of small intestinal cancers are attributed to carcinoid tumours. These most commonly occur in the small intestine, appendix, rectum and spreading to the lungs, liver and bones. The production of vasoactive materials such as prostaglandins and serotonin cause a carcinoid syndrome.
