Civil engineering is a professional engineering discipline that deals with the design, construction, and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment, including works like roads, bridges, canals, dams, and buildings. Civil engineers are responsible for planning and designing a project and having it constructed to the required scale. New areas include the field of structural engineering and emerging technologies like Finite element analysis, Artificial intelligence and neural networks.
What Do Civil Engineers Do?
Civil engineers design and build bridges, roads, railways, and tunnels. They design and build tall structures and large buildings such as multi-storey car parks, train stations, and even the Olympic stadium. A Civil Engineer is responsible for the design of safe structures which meet standard building codes in the regions that they are being built in. These structures must be designed with maintenance, efficiency, and other economic concerns in mind as well to ensure that they will endure through years of use.
