The Arabica coffee grown in Cameroon comes from Java breed which was introduced into Cameroon in the 1930’s by German missionaries. Coffee farms where introduced in all regions of Cameroon and became a major export commodity from Cameroon. Arabica Coffee from Cameroon is rated amongst the best coffees in the world. It is grown on the western highlands at altitudes of 2500-3000m above sea level on slightly acidic and volcanic soils. These favorable conditions give the coffee a unique aroma and flavor. Most of coffee grown in Kumbo region grows under tall trees which gives them a shade hence making them to mature healthily. Bui division our farming area situated in the North West region of Cameroon is one of the highest producing areas with over 1000 tons annually. In fact coffee is the main cash crop of the area though it has witnessed a steep fall in production due to the fall in world market coffee prices in the early 90s. Farming in the area is small scale from 3-15ha farms. The area has a potential to produce over 3000 tons of coffee even though the present production stands at about 1,000tons. coffee is when we have Arabica coffee washed, dried, and graded. First, coffee berries are harvested generally by hand from tree. Then sorted by ripeness and color and the flesh of the berry is removed, usually by pulping machine, and then the seeds—usually called parchment - are fermented to remove the slimy layer of mucilage still present on the bean. After this, the beans are washed with water to remove the fermentation residue and dried for 2-3 days. Finally, the dried up seeds are then taken to mill where processing takes place.
