Open source is software available for free and comes with a license that allows for unlimited modification and distribution. The name "open source" stems from the fact that every line of code is available for the public at no cost. Examples of open source software that have widespread adoption are: Linux, Apache, MySQL, BSD, and Firefox.
It is important to note that just as with commercial software, not all products classified as open source are equal. At one end of the spectrum are well managed, highly used products like Drupal, where there is a published product roadmap and new versions are released frequently. At the other end are inferior products created and managed by only a few individuals, with little documentation or community support available.
Top enterprise-ready open source software will:
• Be maintained by a non-profit foundation that helps organize and maintain updates, community collaboration, and awareness and branding for the technology.
• Have a sizeable developer and support community
• Be in use by some large and distinguished organizations
