Police officers

Police officers are professionals in law enforcement who serve in city police departments. The boundaries of a city or town determine its police department's jurisdiction. However, police departments regularly help one another across such boundaries in the event of an emergency. Police officers also may serve as court bailiffs.

What is a constable?

States define the roles of their constables, so there is significant variation in how governments fill the position and assign its duties. Sometimes, the people of a district or election precinct elect a constable. In other cases, local officials appoint them. Either way, constables usually serve relatively small, well-defined geographic areas and communities.
Constables might perform law enforcement functions similar to police officers, such as making traffic stops or apprehending suspects, or they might work closely with courts to perform judicial responsibilities, such as serving warrants and subpoenas.

The county commissioner's court typically pays constables' salaries using state or local taxes. Some states require candidates for running for the office of constable to be licensed law enforcement officers, while others provide training to whomever's elected.
