With October dawning on us, it is a little over a month to go for CAT 2014. How one prepares during this period would go a long way in determining ones performance in CAT and other premier MBA entrance tests. This, in turn, would open the doors to the much sought after top B-Schools in the country.
The sufficiency of this time for your preparation depends on intelligent planning and effective execution of those plans. We will look at the different aspects that one needs to keep in mind while preparing for CAT 2014 over the next one month.

Conceptual clarity has always been the cornerstone for performing well in CAT. With the change in test pattern (longer time duration, increase in the number of questions, no sectional time limits), efficient time management during the test has once again become extremely important. These two key aspects – concept building and effective test taking – will determine the success of aspirants in CAT 2014. With one month to go, the focus will now shift towards building an effective test taking strategy. This, no doubt, assumes that over the past few months of preparation, one has built a basic level of conceptual knowledge in the test areas. You should now use mock tests to look at getting advanced level practice on the concepts, along with polishing the strategy.

We will, in this article discuss how to utilize mocks effectively and how to interpret our scores from the mocks for better performance.
Using Mocks as tools for better performance
    How to Write a Test
While there can be several approaches to test-writing in general, in the case of the CAT 2014 where there are 100 questions to be answered in 170 min, the following is a method that would be more effective for most students:
    • Solve the paper in iterations: Try and finish the first iteration of about 140-150 min, for both the sections. Since you know that you need to reach the end of the paper by the end of 150 min, you tend to keep the pace high. Do this by attempting only the easy and do-able questions. Therefore, solve the easiest questions first, make sure that do not get stuck on any question for long and skip the difficult questions. In the 2nd iteration, the remaining time of about 20-30 minutes, solve the remaining questions from the section where you feel you need to answer some more questions, or simply try to answer as many questions as possible, in order to maximize your score.
    • Use the mocks to identify the time that will be required for each section at various difficulty levels. You need to understand that the time allocated needs to be increased or decreased based on the difficulty level of the paper.

Common problems related to test analysis
A lot of students approach us with questions regarding how to analyze performance in the mocks, what areas to look for and how to convert them into action items. Here are a few frequently observed issues:
    1. Too much fluctuation in your scores: This could happen because you have been undertaking unwarranted/not well thought out experiments with your strategy, or have been writing mocks when you are tired or not in a position to concentrate. It is also possible that there were undue disturbances around you while you were giving the mock etc.Ensure that you take the mocks free of any mental and physical disturbances. Think through the test taking strategy to be used in the mock before the test. While the dynamics of the test may warrant some changes to this strategy, as you know that one of the objectives of the mock if to test out the strategy, take a call during the test on this and keep this in mind when you are evaluating your performance. above all, remember not to over-do mock-taking. Two or three tests a week should be just right.

    2. You get stuck midway into the questions: While this is an issue with difficult questions in general, it rankles when this happens for the seemingly easy/moderate questions as well. For such questions we tend to vaguely remember the concepts we had studied and get stuck while solving the questions. The most common reason for this is that while practicing, we tend to 'see' the solution/concept instead of solving the question. You need to solve questions to be able to remember the application of concepts. Merely having seen a solution/concept is not sufficient.
At times it may happen simply because you are unable to figure a necessary condition/equation from the question. This would mean that this is a difficult question for you and you would have been better off not attempting this question in the first place. Hence, better question selection needs to be focused on.
    3. Inability to increase attempts: Try this for a solution. Look for questions that you left during the test because you were not sure of your answers and see how often you tend to be right. This will help you decide if you are being overly cautious during question selection.

    4. Too many incorrect answers in the tests (lower than 75% accuracy in general): This could happen for a variety of reasons including not having read the question carefully, misinterpreting it or marking wrong answer choices or a tendency to mark answers without getting an exact answer. It is also possible that you have not understood the concepts or have overlooked certain cases/perspectives in your solution. alternately, you could be suffering from a tendency to get over stressed during the test and hurrying through the questions. Identify your reason – the solution will be obvious.
