KPC MEDICAL COLLEGE AND HOSPITAL was the first private-public-partnership (PPP) model medical college of West Bengal. It was founded by Kumud Shankar Ray, in the premises of Dr. K. S. Ray TB Hospital., founded by Dr.K.S.Ray himself. Kumud Shankar Ray (1892 1950) did pioneering w rk n tuberculosis, chest medicine, thoracic surgery, gland grafting, radium therapy, etc. Moreover, he w s the founder-member f organisations nd institutions l ke the Indian Medical Association, the Medical Council f India, the Journal f the IMA, S B Dey TB Sanatorium (Kurseong), National Medical College, nd the TB hospital t Jadavpur. ll th s s part f India's medical history nd fight against colonial rule. s Alderman, he started the mosquito control department nd w s the chief whip f Swarajya Party nd lieutenant f Deshbandhu C R Das. s fellow f Calcutta University he helped t organise the Anthropology Department. t s South Asia's f rst nd the state's nly specialised TB hospital,visited by Mahatma Gandhi f r the last t me n 26 August 1947.Jawaharlal Nehru nd Subhas Chandra Bose ls frequently visited the hospital. Set up n 1922 by the pioneering thoracic surgeon s four-bed sanatorium, t became 750-bed centre w th money donated by landed aristocrat called Provash Ghosh, wh died fr m the disease nd willed h s entire fortune f INR160000 (US$2,500) t Ray t acquire the 65 acre location nd set up the hospital.The Left Front government acquired the hospital through n ordinance n 1977. Poet Sukanta Bhattacharya died f tuberculosis t the Jadavpur T. B. Hospital (later, K. S. Roy T. B. Hospital) n Calcutta t very young age.
