An Institutional research committee has been formed at BIDS to promote research and publications by the students and the faculty.The committee will conduct a scientific review of the research proposals by the faculty.The ambit of research work in the institution includes monitoring of research and allied academic disciplines.
Established in the year 1991 under the dynamic leadership of Mr. K Subba Rao, Chairman, VEF, the Institution has grown leaps and bounds. The first batch of students passed out of the college on 8th November 1995 which happens to be the red letter day when the premier Dental Council of India gave recognition to the Institution. The year 2002 saw the first batch of Post-graduates leaving the Institution in the following six Specialities:-

BACHELOR OF DENTAL SURGERY (BDS)
Bachelor Of Dental Surgery or BDS is one of the most popular and designated degree of dentists. BDS is the only educational and professional programme of dental surgery in India. In the medical educational field, it s the second choice of the students after the MBBS course.
The BDS degree is awarded on the successful completion of the four year academic education and the one year mandatory internship programme in dentistry education . Dental Courses comprise didactic lectures, demonstrations, group discussions, seminars, clinical work and conferences.

Eligibility - BDS course
QUALIFYING EXAMINATION:
A candidate seeking admission to first BDS course:
a) Should have passed the two years Pre-University Examination of Pre-University Board of Karnataka with English and Physics Chemistry and Biology as optional subjects. The candidate shall have passed subjects of English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology individually* also.
b) Should have passed any other examination conducted by Boards/Councils/Intermediate Education established by State Governments/ Central Government and recognized as equivalent to two year Pre University examination by the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences/Association of Indian Universities (AIU), with English as one of the subjects and Physics, Chemistry and Biology as optional subjects and the candidate shall have passed subjects of English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology individually.
c) Should have passed Intermediate examination in Science of an Indian University/Board/Council or other recognized examining bodies with Physics, Chemistry and Biology, which shall include a practical test in these subjects and also English as compulsory subject. The candidate shall have passed subjects of English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology individually.
d) Should have passed pre- professional/ pre- medical examination with Physics, Chemistry and Biology, after passing either the higher secondary school examination. The pre-professional/ pre- medical examination, shall include a practical test in Physics, Chemistry and Biology and also English as compulsory subject.
e) Should have passed first year of the three year degree course of a recognized University with Physics, Chemistry and Biology including a practical test in these subjects provided the Examination is an 'University Examination' provided that the candidate shall have passed subjects of English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology individually in the pre university or other examinations mentioned in the clauses above.
f) Should have passed B.Sc. Examination of an Indian University, provided that he/she has passed the B.Sc. examination with not less than two of the following subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Biology (Botany, Zoology) provided the candidate has passed subjects of English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology individually in the qualifying examinations mentioned in clauses (a), (b) and (C)
QUALIFYING MARKS:
THE SELECTION OF STUDENTS TO DENTAL COLLEGES SHALL BE BASED ON MERIT PROVIDED THAT:
In case of admission on the basis of qualifying examination, a candidate for admission to BDS course must have passed individually in the subjects of Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English and must have obtained a minimum of 50% marks taken together in Physics, Chemistry and Biology in the qualifying examination. In respect of candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes or Other Backward Classes, the marks obtained in Physics, Chemistry and Biology taken together in qualifying examination be 40% instead of 50% as above and must have passing marks in English.
In case of admission on the basis of competitive entrance examination, a candidate must have passed individually in the subjects of Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English and must have obtained a minimum of 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology taken together at the qualifying examination and in addition must have come in the merit list prepared as a result of such competitive entrance examination by securing not less than 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology taken together in the competitive examination. In respect of candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes or Other Backward Classes notified by the Government, the marks obtained in Physics, Chemistry and Biology taken together in qualifying examination and competitive entrance examination is 40% instead of 50% as stated above. (Vide Amendment to DCI Regulations, 2007, notified in Gazette of Government of India dated 10.09.2007).
AGE REQUIREMENT:
The candidate shall have completed the age of 17 years at the time of admission or will complete this age on 31st December of the year in which he/she seeks admission.

ELIGIBILITY - MDS COURSE
A candidate for admission to the MDS course (Master of Dental Surgery) must have a. recognized degree of BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) awarded by an Indian University in respect of recognized Dental College under Section 10(2) of the Dentists Act, 1948 or an equivalent qualification recognized by the Dental Council of India and should have obtained permanent registration with the State Dental Council. Candidates not possessing a recognized Dental qualification for the above purpose should secure the prior approval of his qualifications by the Dental Council of India before he can be admitted to the MDS Course of any University in India.

Candidates who possess PG Diploma recognized by the DCI with the duration of 2 years (proposed) in particular specialty is eligible for admission in MDS in the same specialty and the duration will be 2 years. The syllabus of two years programme will be as per the concerned university guidelines.
Provided that in the case of a foreign national, the Dental Council of India may, on payment of the prescribed fee for registration, grant temporary registration for the duration of the postgraduate training restricted to the dental college/institution to which he is admitted for the time being exclusively for postgraduate studies.
Provided that further temporary registration to such foreign national shall be subject to the condition that such person is duly registered as dental practitioner in his own country from which he has obtained his basic dental qualification and that his degree is recognized by the corresponding dental council or concerned authority.
CRITERIA FOR SELECTION FOR ADMISSION
Students for MDS Course shall be admitted based on performance at the competitive examinations held by Central government/State government/Universities or Institutions.

In line with Smile train Foundation s vision and on-going efforts to provide comprehensive, multi-disciplinary cleft care to our underserved patient population we pioneered advanced training program in Cleft lip and Cleft Palate. This one year Fellowship program aims at training the Oral and Maxillofacial surgeons in the management and rehabilitation of Cleft lip and palate and other craniofacial anomaly patients. It helps the trainee surgeons to understand the wide array of complex craniofacial defects and malformations seen in the pediatric population to adulthood and the principles of management of the same. Apart from the above, the surgeons are also trained in fine soft tissue management in Oral and Craniofacial area, principles and protocols of cleft surgery and skeletal surgeries that enhance the cosmetic harmony of the face. The training also provides the candidates an insight into the Reconstructive facial surgery for congenital anomalies using the state of art technology and techniques. Most of the surgeries performed are as per the International Standards. This also serves as a centre of research, and seeks to take advantage of its volume and expertise to offer the academic literature some of the most powerful studies in the world, that in turn will redefine best practices in care.

POST DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP IN AESTHETIC FACIAL SURGERY
Facial aesthetics is a complex concept. It is subjective and facial attractiveness varies between nations, cultures and societies. There may be various reasons to seek facial aesthetic surgery. These include dissatisfaction with naturally-given features, congenital problems, the wish to camouflage scars, or a desire to reverse the changes that have occurred due to ageing or life events.
