The Indian Medical Service (IMS) was founded in 1764 by the British East India Company to care for Europeans in British India. On May 9, 1822, the British Government announced a plan to fill native doctor positions in the Presidency of Bengal's civil and military establishments. They established "The Native Medical Institution" on June 21, 1822, for the stated objective of offering medical education in the indigenous tongue. In 1833, the William Bentinck committee suggested that a medical college be established "for the education of the locals." As a result, on January 28, 1835, a new medical college, known as the Medical College Kolkata, was created. Its goal was to provide training to native youths of all castes and creeds.
