Permcath placement is a medical procedure used to insert a permanent catheter, typically for long-term access to a patient's bloodstream. This type of catheter is often used for patients requiring prolonged intravenous treatments, such as dialysis or chemotherapy.
Procedure Description:
Preparation:
The patient is usually placed in a sterile environment, and the area where the catheter will be inserted is cleaned and sterilized.
Local anesthesia is administered to numb the area.
Insertion:
A small incision is made near a large vein, commonly in the neck (internal jugular vein) or chest (subclavian vein).
Using ultrasound guidance, the catheter is carefully inserted into the vein and advanced until the tip is positioned in the central vein, typically near the heart.
Securing the Catheter:
The catheter is tunneled under the skin to reduce the risk of infection and then secured in place.
The external part of the catheter is secured to the skin, and a dressing is applied.
Post-Procedure Care:
The placement site is monitored for signs of infection or complications.
The patient may receive antibiotics to prevent infection.
The catheter is flushed regularly to maintain patency and prevent clot formation.
