Headquartered in Thiruvananthapuram, APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University is a state university established by the Government of Kerala. This was well known as Kerala Technological University, as it was set up in 2014. It changed its name to the present after the death of the former president and famous scientist from Kerala, APJ Abdul Kalam, in 2015. Headed at its inception by former AICTE officials, the Kerala Technological University looks after all aspects of technological and engineering education and research in Kerala. The core areas of focus for the university are research, development and innovation. The university has been established both as a teaching and affiliation university. The renowned Saintgits group of institutes, which are in teaching and research of engineering, management and applied sciences, are affiliated to this university, as are many other technological and vocational institutes in Kerala. In fact, Saintgits accounts for many of the top rank holders in Kalam Technological University
