The Department of Botany aims to form citizens who are globally competent in plant science and are self reliant role models for the society. We wish to imbibe in our students a strong sense of responsibility for the environment and make them into crusaders for a green earth. Established in 1954 the department has consistently managed to ignite a passion in students to conserve nature and natural resources.
The department was also once headed by the towering botanist, the late Rev. Fr. Dr. Cecil .J. Saldanha, whose achievements have inspired hundreds of students and continues to be a guiding light to the Department and the College to this day.
Head of the Department: Dr. Betty Daniel PG Co-ordinator : Dr. K B Purushothama The department of Botany at St. Josephs College was started in 1954 Botany was taught only at B.Sc level with only the CBZ combination. In 1986, the Post Graduate and Research Centre was established and the department offered M.Sc under affiliation to Bangalore University.
Presently, the programs offered by the department include four undergraduate courses with a maximum intake of 70 students each. The post-graduate programme intake was 20 until 2014 after which it was increased to 30. In the final year of the Master's programme, four elective papers are offered by the department (two elective papers per semester) and students specialize in any two of their choice. It is mandatory for all the post-graduate students to work on a short term project in the 2nd year (3rd and 4th semesters) in the electives offered by the department which involves various areas of research like Advanced Plant Physiology, Plant Tissue Culture, Plant Taxonomy and Microbiology.

Web based interactive smart classes for theory and practicals are conducted along the tradtional chalk and talk method. Stereo zoom microscopes and a special innovative device named Luminous focusing system interfaced with LCD projectors binocular microscopes with built-in cameras and laptops are available to enable student for in depth observations and photography. Plant taxonomy practical sessions are conducted through an online connect to the JCB Herbaria of Indian Institute of Science which is a digital herbaria based on the monumental work of Dr. Cecil .J. Saldanha s Karnataka flora (volume 1 and 2 ). All his herbarial collections are converted into digital herbaria.
The Department maintains a green house for research purposes. At the UG and PG level, students are trained with techniques of preparation of herbaria and also about the preservation techniques too.

The department has three permanent staff; all faculty members have independent a UGC funded Minor research projects.
The Department laboratories are equipped with PCR , gel documentation units, ice flaker unit, Biofermentor, live screening camera, deep freezers, DNA sequencing units, Laminar air flow hoods, UV spectrophotometers, and Soxhlet apparatus. Mushroom cultivation unit, plant tissue culture unit and microbiology unit for high end research work have also been established. Compulsory industrial tours are implemented in the curriculum. The department has recorded few practical procedures demonstrated by our teachers as videos documentation to assist students. Lecture method and other interactive methods like project-based learning, computer-assisted learning, experiential learning, seminars and others are used by the teachers for various subjects. Students are also encouraged to take part in symposiums and workshops. The final year students undergo an Entrepreneurship course. Bioinformatics and allied training are part of the curriculum. Biostatistics is a compulsory paper.
Every attempt is made to enhance teacher-student interaction as students feel more comfortable to approach teachers with problems of any kind, academic or nonacademic. Freedom during practical classes is offered so that students are encouraged to carry out experiments independently.
