The Microbiology, Immunology and Infection doctoral program of the Department of Microbiology & Immunology is one of the specialized research and training areas within the Integrated Program in Cellular, Molecular and Biomedical Studies

Microbiology are the study of the agents responsible for causing human or animal infections: bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites. This includes the study of underlying mechanisms of pathogen virulence, diagnostics and identification of pathogens, pathogen epidemiology, and antimicrobial resistance. In IGH we study infectious agents in both humans and animals of economic importance.

The aims of the research are to investigate the transmission routes and behaviour of pathogens during infections and use this knowledge to design better therapeutic strategies or vaccines in order to improve the health of humans and animals.

The mission of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology is to conduct the best possible research and provide the most rigorous and inspiring training in the areas of microbiology, immunology, host-pathogen interaction and related fields. Through such activities, our goal is to improve human and animal health as well as to improve our ability to be responsible stewards of a fragile earth.
