Ayurveda is a traditional Indian medical system that's been used for thousands of years. The term comes from the Sanskrit words ayur (life) and veda (science or knowledge). Ayurveda is a type of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) therapy and is based on the idea that disease is caused by an imbalance in a person's consciousness. The goal of Ayurvedic treatment is to restore balance to the body, mind, and spirit by eliminating impurities, reducing symptoms, and increasing resistance to disease.
Ayurveda uses a variety of treatments, including:
Diet
Herbal medicines
Exercise
Meditation
Breathing
Physical therapy
Panchakarma: ("5 actions")
Yoga
Massage
Acupuncture
Ayurvedic treatments often combine products derived from plants, animals, metals, and minerals. Practitioners may also consider factors like emotional state, food choices, seasons, weather, physical trauma, and relationships. For example, if a patient has an imbalance in their "pitta" dosha, they might be more likely to get angry or excited, make rash decisions, or experience inflammation, rashes, or digestive issues. Practitioners might suggest calming activities, eating cooler foods, or following a Mediterranean diet to help balance their pitta.
