Vellore Institute of Technology, commonly called VIT University is an Indian institute of higher education and a Deemed University under Section 3 of the UGC Act. Founded in 1984, as Vellore Engineering College, by Mr. G. Viswanathan, the institution offers 18 undergraduate and 34 postgraduate programmes and draws students from 47 countries as well as from every state in India. It has campuses both at Vellore and Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. The university has been consistently placed in top 10 list of Indian colleges by leading magazines like India Today and The Week.

VIT University has much more restrictive “hostel rules” for female students, relative to their male counterparts. Opponents of gender inequity regard this as evidence of gender discrimination at VIT, while VIT officials claim that stricter female hostel rules are a necessary safety precaution.[6][7][8]
In October 2013, two female students were reprimanded (their parents were required to take them home) after they helped to organize an online opinion survey of female VIT students, focusing on issues of female safety and inequality.[7][8][9] Only less than 10% the total girl students living in the VIT University female hostel took part in the survey even after knowing well that their identity will never be revealed. In such a survey among other revelations, the survey indicated that roughly 84% of respondents were dissuaded "from speaking out publicly against VIT’s management decisions" by "fear of expulsion, suspension or other academic devastation".[9]
On February 26, 2014, a circular by the university's Registrar appealed students "to avoid any physical contact except for handshakes". The circular added, "Inspite [sic] of this appeal, if students indulge in indecent behaviour, suitable corrective actions will be taken against them." The circular spiked a controversy and was considered to be a violation of students' fundamental rights that the Constitution of India guarantees.

VIT has consolidated its disciplines into nine "Schools of Study." Research centers are part of the schools, to encourage collaboration amongst the research and coursework areas and to provide opportunity for coursework students to participate in research projects.
