AJANATA
About 107 kms from the city of Aurangabad, the rock cut caves of Ajanta nestle in a panaromic gorge, in the form of a gigantic horseshoe. Among the finest examples of some of the earliest . Buddhist architecture, cave paintings and sculptures, these caves comprise Chaitya Halls, or shrines dedicated to Lord Buddha and Viharas or monasteries used by Buddhist monks for meditation and the study of Buddhist teachings.
The thirty rock-hewn caves at Ajanta, cut into the scarp of a cliff are either Chaityas (chapels) or Viharas (monasteries). On the walls of the caves are paintings, many still glowing with their original colours. The outer walls are covered with brilliantly executed sculpture. The Buddhist theme of the Ajanta paintings recounts the life of Lord Buddha and tales of his previous earthly experiences.
The view point from where John Smith first glimsed the caves, provides a magnificent sight of the U-Shaped gorge and its scenic surroundings.Ajanta has been designated as a World Heritage Site, to be preserved as an artistic legacy that will come to inspire and enrich the lives of generations to come. The caves including the unfinished ones are thirty in number, of which five (9, 10, 19, 26 and 29) are chaitya-grihas and the rest are sangharamas or viharas (monasteries). After centuries of oblivion, these caves were discovered in AD 1819.They fall into two distinct phases with a break of nearly four centuries between them. All the caves of the earlier phase date between 2nd century BC-AD.
The caves of the second phase were excavated during the supremacy of the Vakatakas and Guptas. According to inscriptions, Varahadeva, the minister of the Vakataka king, Harishena (c. 475-500 AD), dedicated Cave 16 to the Buddhist sangha while Cave 17 was the gift of the prince, a feudatory. An inscription records that- Buddha image in Cave 4 was the gift of some Abhayanandi who hailed from Mathura.
A few paintings which survive on the walls of Caves 9 and 10 go back to the 2nd century BC-AD. The second group of the paintings started in about the fifth century AD and continued for the next two centuries as, noticeable in later caves. The themes are intensely religious in tone and centre round Buddha, Bodhisattvas, incidents from the life of Buddha and the Jatakas. The paintings are executed on a ground of mud-plaster in the tempera technique.

around 15000. The city earns the major part of its revenue from
the tourists and pilgrims whose number sometimes crosses the
30000 mark with utmost ease. This holy destination is a home to a
great legend Sai Baba who lived her for around eighty years
before he went into his samadhi some 80 years ago in 1918. Shirdi

are covered with small shops, most of them selling material that
are offered at the temple.
Sai baba raised a flower garden in the village and used to water
the plants everyday He spent a lot of his later years in that
garden. Sai Baba went through his divine mission by providing the
needy with his love, compassion, purity and spiritual knowledge
that helped them live a happy and dignified life. Sai Baba left

ELLORA
The Ellora Caves are a group of 34 caves that symbolises the
brilliance of Buddhist architecture in India. The caves are
representatives of three faiths- Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism.
12 of the caves areBuddhists, 17 in the centre represent Hindu
faith while remaining 5 caves to the north are representatives of
Jainism. Entry fee for Indians who are above 15 years is Rs 10.00
and for foreigners it Buddhists, 17 in the centre represent Hindu
faith while remaining 5 caves to the north are representatives of
Jainism.
History
The Ellora caves were carved between 350 AD and 700 AD. The caves
have a universal significance as they represent an amalgam of the
pantheon of India gods and goddesses. Ellora is a centre of
Tantarism and magical and occult practices can be observed here.
There are 12 Buddhist caves, 17 Hindu temples and 5 Jain temples.
The Buddhist caves date back between 200 BC to 600 AD. The Hindu
temples date back from about 500 AD to 900 while the temples
representing Jainism date from about 800 AD to 1000 AD. Among the
three groups of structures, the Hindu caves are the most
beautifully designed.
Architecture
Spreading over an area of 1 mile ( 2 km), the Ellora caves are a
collection of thirty-four magnificent rock-carved temples. The
temples are carved out of basaltic cliffs. The Hindu caves are
the most elaborately designed. Cave 16 is called Kailasa for its
location in the Kailas range of the Himalayas. In this cave
resides the Hindu God Shiva. This cave was built in during the
rulership of Krishna I ( about 756- 773). The Kailasa cave is
known all over for its brilliant architecture and its elaborate
workmanship. Cave 12 is a Buddhist cave and is also known as
Tintala. The most fascinating fact about the cave is that this
3-storey structure has been carved out of a solid rock.

It is a two-storey building. The architectural design resembles
that of the Golden Temple. It's interior is artistically
ornamented in the style of Harmandir Sahib, Amritsar. The walls
of the inner room called Angitha Sahib have been covered with
golden plates On the first floor, recitations from Sri Guru
Granth Sahib, go on day and night. The dome is polished and on
the pinnacle is the kalash made of gold plated copper.
Some of the sacred relics of Guru Gobind Singh are also preserved
here. These are, a golden dagger, a matchlock gun, an archer with
35 arrows, two bows, a steel shield studded with precious stones
and five golden swords.
This historical shrine is situated on the bank of the Godavari
river and is visited by thousands of devotees throughout the year
from all over India and abroad. It is one of the five Takhts
(thrones) of the Sikhs and is much venerated by them. Here took
place in the first week of September, 1708, the conversion to
Sikhism of a Bairagi Sadhu Madho Dass, who under a new name of
Banda Singh Bahadur, gave a sharp turn to the history of the
Sikhs. It was this great hero who in the next seven years
(1709-1715) shook the Mughal empire in the north-west to its very
foundation and paved the way for the liberation of the Punjab in
1764-65.
Guru Gobind Singh's mission was not to consolidate his power. to
achieve mundane glory, by pitting one community against another.
His crusade was not directed against Islam either. He makes it
clear in the' following words. "Men quarrel over food and dress,
rituals and caste, community and creed and have thus torn man
from man. My mission is to restore mankind to a single
brotherhood

SHANI TEMPLE
The presiding deity of Shinganapur, Sri Shaneshwara or Shanidev-
the personification of the planet Saturn is worshipped with
utmost reverence and devotion by multitudes of people from all
over the world. The spectacle of the deity in black stone is
overwhelming. A unique aspect of this place is, that no temple
structure houses the Shanidev. There is only a simple platform on
which stands the swayambhu idol, in black stone.
Suryadev(son of Brahma) and Sandna (the daugther of Daksha
Prajapati) were Shri Shaneshwar's parents.
Sandna and Suryadev had two sons Dakshinadhipati Yama and Shri
Shaneshwar and four daughters Tapti, Bhadra, Kalindi and
Savitri.
Sandna finding it unbearable to live with the harsh glare of
Surya's light, created her own replica and named her as Sanvarna
and asked her to behave as Surya's wife and perform all the
duties and savour the privileges of a wife. She made her promise
that under no condition would she reveal to Suryadev that she was
not Sandna and promised to help her when needed.
Sandna went back to her father Daksha. When Daksha saw that his
daughter coming back, he advised her that she better live with
her husband only. The dejected Sandna did not follow her father's
advise and instead transformed herself into a mare and resided in
the Himalayas and started penance.
Savarna performed the role of dutiful wife. She also gave birth
to five sons and two daughters from Surya. Surya did not have any
doubts about Sanvarna.
One day Shanidev was very hungry and he asked his mother to give
him something to eat. She asked him to wait till she had made her
first offering to God. But Shanidev insisted on serving him first
and in anger kicked his mother Sanvarna. She in return cursed him
that his leg would break.
Shanidev reported the matter to his father Surya. Surya said," a
mother would never curse a son like this." Surya observed
Sanvarna closely and found that she was not Sandna. Surya was
enraged and asked her who she was. Sanvarna confessed that she
was a 'shadow' of Sandna. and that Sandna had gone to the
Himalaya for penance.
Surya told Shanidev that Sanvarna was like his mother and her
curse would not go in vain. It is therefore that Shanidev has one
lame leg.
Shinganapur is a village situated at a distance of 6 kms from
