What exactly is avascular necrosis?
Avascular necrosis is a condition caused by a temporary or permanent loss of blood supply to the bone. When the blood supply to the bone is restricted, the bone tissue degenerates and collapses. Avascular necrosis may cause the joint surface to collapse if it occurs near a joint.
This condition can occur in any bone. It most commonly occurs at the ends of long bones. It can affect a single bone, multiple bones at once, or different bones at different times.
