Gangotri is a religious town situated in the heart of Uttarkashi district in the state of Uttarakhand. The town is lies on the bank of Bhagirathi River. The major attraction of the town is Gangotri Shrine Dedicated to Goddess Ganga. Gangotri is a pilgrimage destination and one of four chardham. The Gangotri temple was built by the Gorkha commander in 18th century and it is situated at an elevation of 3042 meters above the sea level. Gaumukh Glacier is the origan point of Ganga River which is situated at a distance of 19 km from Gangotri Temple. The shrine is surrounding by the majestic snow capped Himalayan Range and amazing nature beauty. The temple opens on the day of Akashya Tritiya in the month of last week of April or first week of May and closes after two days of Diwali on the day of Bhai Duj. Thousands of the tourists from all around the country visit this destination to get the blessings of Goddess Ganga. The River Ganga is known as the Bhagirathi River in Gangotri but at Devprayag merge into the Alaknanda River it got its name Ganga . Apart from a religious site it also offered the beautiful 19 km trekking to reach Gaumukh Glacier from Gangotri Temple. The snow capped Peaks, Deodar trees, top of the majestic hills, thick dense forest, ice cold water of River etc increase the charm of the place and made it more attractive. According to the legend it is believed that king Bhagirath did serious penance to impress Goddess Ganga because he want his Ancestors could achieve moksha. More than 1000 years king Bhagirathi was able to impress her and then Goddess Ganga was agreed to come down on the earth. Lord Shiva was locked her in his luscious to save the man kind. Kharsali village is the winter seat of Goddess Ganga. During the winters due to heavy Snowfall when the roads are blocked and the temple is not accessible to reach then the idol of Goddess Ganga is transferred to Khaesali for the next six months. Bhojbasa, Gangnani, Bhaironghati, Jalmagan Shivlinga, Harsil, Surya kund etc are the other major attraction of the place. Every year thousands of the devotees visit this shrine during the month of May to July and again September to October. There are lots of Ashrams and hotels provide good accommodations. The Destinations is well connected by the Air, Railway and Road connectivity. Taxis and Buses are easily available to reach Gangotri. Few restaurants are available here and Indian or chinese foods are available here. During the visit don t forget to carry heavy woollen clothes.
