Differences between cost and equity methods of investments

The Cost Method:
The cost method is designed for situations when the investing company has a minority interest in the other company and it exerts little or no significant influence in the other company's affairs.
Equity Method:
The equity method is meant for investing companies that exert significant influence over the other company while still retaining minority ownership.
