R mniranjan nandil l Pod r College of Commerce and Economics (Autonomous), popularly known simply as Podar College or R.A. Podar College.
It is run by the Shikshan Prasarak Mandali also called the S.P. Mandali.
The College is located in central Mumbai, on Lakhamsi Napoo Road which is on the east side of M tung central railway station.
The college offers courses in commerce for undergraduate degrees.
Affiliated Wellingkar Institute of Management and Commerce offers postgraduate degrees and postgraduate diplomas in commerce and management.
R.A. Podar College of Commerce & Economics, Mumbai has had a long history, which commenced with the freedom struggle of India.
The visionaries of that time realized that they should start an institution which would inculcate the indigenous values and have the thrust of social and cultural value system that are typical to the grand heritage of our country.
In August 1940, the trust known as 'Shikshana Prasaraka Mandali', Pune, made an application to the Bombay University for permission to start a Commerce College.
He wished to build an institution in the memory of his brother Ramniranjan Anandialal Podar who had died at a young age.
At the cost of Rs.1,50,000/- he constructed the building that houses the college today, and gifted it to the S.P. Mandali on the 7th of February 1941.

History of the College

In 1941, a prominent Marwari Industrialist Seth R mdeoji nandil l Pod r provided funds of one hundred and fifty thousand rupees a substantial sum in those times for establishing the College in the memory of his brother, R mniranjan nandil l Pod r, giving the charge of running the college to the Shikshan Pras rak Mandali. The College was the first private (non-government) commerce college to be started in Mumbai.

The College started to offer B.Com. degree course in 1942. The first batch of students at Podar College consisted of 150 students. There were just three classrooms and a small staff of competent teachers. Gradually, the number of class rooms increased. The main hall and the library appeared in 1947-48. In 1949, the college started providing some of the teaching and administrative staff with quarters, and students with hostel facilities.

The College received its affiliation with the then University of Bombay (now University of Mumbai) in 1950.

How the College did got accredited to NAAC

About NAAC i.e. the National Assessment and Accreditation Council, is an autonomous body established by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India to assess and accredit institutes of higher education in the country.

In the first cycle, the NAAC accredited the College with a grade of A+, in the year 2004, for a period of 5 years. As on the date of accreditation, College was the first institution in Maharashtra and 8th in India to have obtained the A+ grade.

In the next cycle, the College maintained its status and was ranked as an A grade college by NAAC, with a CGPA of 3.63. As on 27th March 2011, this was the highest CGPA obtained by any affiliated college in Maharashtra.

Cultural Activities in the College

Student's Council
Artist's Guild & Youth Festival (The Artist's Guild promotes performing arts through several inter-collegiate talent competitions and cultural programs. The Youth Festival participates in inter-collegiate cultural competitions. Podar College has distinguished itself by winning the Youth Festival Trophy 16 times since its inception. University of Mumbai has awarded Podar College the Best College Award.
The Annual Inter-Collegiate festival 'Enigma' hosts over 100 colleges.
