The king Bhagirath did a serious penance to impress the Goddess Ganga for salvation of his ancestors and the Goddess Ganga agreed to come down on the earth. Then the Lord Shiva locked River Ganga in his luscious to save the entire mankind. The River Ganga is known as the Bhagirathi in Gangotri and before the confluence with Alaknanda at Devprayag it is also known as Ganga River. Gaumukh Glacier is source of River Ganga and the Glacier is situated 18 km from Gangotri Temple. Gaumukh is the second largest glacier of India offered the beautiful 18 km trekking. During the winters when the roads blocked and the destination is not accessible due to heavy snowfall, the idol of Goddess Ganga is transferred to Mukhba Village. Mukhba is the winter seat of Goddess Ganga and the idol is worshiped here for the next six months. Apart from a religious destination it also offered the some beautiful trekking points like Tapovan, Gaumukh, Bhojbasa, Gangotri Glacier etc. Due to pleasant weather, the best time to visit is May to mid July and again September to October. Surya kund, Jalmagan Shivlinga, Gangani, Dharali, Bhaironghati, Bhojbasa, Harsil, Jalmagan Shivlinga etc are the other major attraction of the place. The destination is well connected by Air, Railway and Roadways. Jolly Grand Airport is the nearest Airport, Rishikesh Railway is the nearest Railhead and the destination is well connected to the motorable road with uttarakhnad.
