On the western tip of Mauritius is an isolated peninsula, Le Morne Brabant with its imposing, 555m basaltic mountain that rises alone from the centre of Le Morne peninsula. It is said that slaves used Le Morne as a hideaway in early 1800s. Because of its slave history; it has been declared a world heritage site and is a popular tourist destination with a golf course, scuba diving, snorkelling, wind surfing, water skiing and boating trips to nearby islands.
Coloured Earth of Chamarel is another must see place in Mauritius. This geological rock formation called the "Seven Coloured Earth" is comprised of dunes of seven different colored layers, seen best in early morning sunlight. The colour bands are believed to result from the uneven rates at which the once-molten rock cooled. One can buy trinkets with test tube creations of the earth at the site.
