Big data is many things to many different people. Every day, we create 2.5 quintillion bytes of data – the equivalent of a 2.5 billion billion. This is so much that 90 per cent of the data in the world today has been created in the last two years alone. But big data is about much more than size and you don’t have to be working with gigantic amounts of data to be considered to be using big data.
Facebook, to look at one end of the scale, is estimated by different online sources to generate something between 30 and 60 terabytes (1 terabyte = 1000 gigabytes) of data every day. If you thought that was big, Google was estimated back in 2008 (before it was even caching YouTube files) to generate 20 petabytes (a petabyte being 1,000 terbytes) of data per day. Needless to say, that is big data.
