KJ SIMSR was established in 1981 as a part of the K. J. Somaiya Trust and Somaiya Vidyavihar with the objective of providing state-of-the-art education in management and allied areas. The institute was inaugurated by Manmohan Singh, former prime minister of India.

It offers programmes including Post Graduate Diploma in Management, Master of Management Studies, Ph.D programmes in Management, and Management Development Programmes.
