Description for "Coorg Cottage, Fishing Facility, 100% Organic Farm, Fishing"

    Welcome to The Last Resort
The Last Resort, not only for you, but for a variety of nature's bounty, exotic birds and increasingly rare animals. Two simple bedrooms, two bathrooms, a private loft equipped with a quaint chimney. See photo page.

Quiet, serene and beautiful. Excellent veg or non-veg food, prepared fresh from the finest local

    Far from the madding crowd...

The house is set in a certified organic farm surrounded by coffee and pepper and with paddy fields stretching to the Cauvery. It is a two bedroom cottage with a loft and two bathrooms (for those diffident about bathing in the river). The sparkling white walls and two level roof make it easy to find and, of course, it is the last house on the right on the village road of Hospatna.
Across the paddies and the river is the Dubare Wildlife Reserve with its creaking bamboo groves.
Hosapatna is 12 kms from Kushalnagar and 16 kms from Siddapur.
From Kushalnagar. If you are coming from Kushalnagar, turn left, after 4 kms, at Guddehosur. You are now on the road to Siddapur, go eight kms, observe the Cauvery on the left, you might even see a raft cruise by. About 100 mts after the 16 km stone you will see a large hall on the left - turn just before the building and proceed into the village. There are a few roads to the right, ignore them, keep left, till you reach two taps. Opposite these public taps is the Last Resort.
See map - contact/map page. The total distance from the Kushalnagar bus stand to the Last Resort is 13.5 kms. The road is single lane and potholed by the monsoons of 2005, I take between 20 and 30 mins by car depending on the traffic.

    Activities in and around

Trekking, swimming, sight seeing are some of the activities outside the cottage.
There are beautiful walks along the river. Most parts of the river are accessible to the public. You can take stroll all alone or with a guide. We need a day's notice to provide a good guide - if you are planning a long trek.
Swimming in the river is ideal for good swimmers. We provide life jackets and a rope as a safety precaution.
There are many interesting places around that are worth seeing. The Dubare Elephant camp is only 1 mile from the Last Resort. The orientation programme run by the Jungle Lodges starts early in the morning and costs about Rs.150 (separate rates for foreigners). Check both the ferry costs and orientation fees before getting into the ferry.
The Tibetan Camp and monastery is only a five kilometres away from Kushalnagar. You can enter the world of Lamas and Momos in a flash.
Nisargadhama is a couple of kilometres from Kushalnagar. It is an island in the Cauvery develped by the forest department as a tourist centre.
The Harangi Dam, Abby Falls, Raja´s Seat, Talacauvery (the source of the River Cauvery) are some of the beautiful spots that attract people.
    Accommodation
The cottage is perfect for a couple or two. Hot water heated in traditional brass vessel is available in one of the bathrooms on request. A ceiling fan in one of the bedrooms hangs there for those who "cannot sleep without a fan".
    Food
A variety of food is available with advance notice.
A kitchenette (an extension of the hall) has a gas stove and fridge. Tea/coffee paraphernalia is provided. Please do not attempt to cook - there is a person on call. Indicate your preferences and we get you the ideal diet.

    Wildlife along the wild river

Birds and animals to look out for...
Mini-vets, drongos, woodpeckers around the house, storks, flighted swifts on the paddy fields and cormorants, brahmini kites, kingfishers on the river and jungle fowl in the forest on the opposite bank. I have seen foxes, wild dogs, porcupines and of course elephants. They come in warm weather when there is little or no water in the forest. They also come during the time of the flowering of the paddy (around December).
    Weather
At 1000 mts (about 3000 ft) above sea level the weather is pleasant through the year. It is almost the same altitude as Bangalore, although the lush vegetation makes it cooler. Temperatures range from 12 deg to 24 deg C in winter and 20 deg to 30 deg C during summer. In a good year we receive about 50 inches of rain. The monsoon, unlike in other parts of Coorg, is interspersed with a lot of sunshine.

    Getting there (see Contact/Map page)
From Bangalore South or East come through Mysore and if you are in the North or West of Bangalore take NH 4 and 48. See map on contact page. Either way, it is approximately the same distance - 220 kms.
On Mysore road turn right just after Srirangapatnam and head towards Yelwal past the Ranganthittu Bird Sanctuary. This Mysore bypass will save you both time and distance. From Yelwal drive straight to Hunsur, Periyapatna and Kushalnagar.
Should you come onTumkur road (NH 4) turn left at Nelamangala onto the Mangalore highway (NH 48) pass Kunigal and turn left at Channarayapatna. Turn right after 2 kms to Holenarsipur (about 20 kms). Cross the Hassan rail line turn left into Holenarsipur, turn right at the bus stand to Arakalgud (about 20 kms). Turn left just before Arakalgud to Ramnathpura, Konnanur (left) to Srirangala, Hebbale in Coorg. The roads are narrow but good. Relatively less traffic and pastoral scenery make the drive interesting. I take about 4 hours from Fraser Town; you will have to reach the Nelamangala turn- off in 35 mins; so start before the traffic gets heavy.
2007 UPDATE Major roadworks for the next year Avoid Holenarsipur! Drive on to Hassan and take the second turn off the by-pass (the first turn left goes to Mysore) to Gorur (Hemavathi Dam) 22 kms. Then take the left just before Arakalgud town at the tollgate to Mallipatna 11 kms. Turn left at the T junction at Mallipatna and go right at the Y junction after a kilometer to Shanivarsante. Go in the front of the petrol station to Somavarpaet 22 kms. After 3 kms on the Somavarpet-Madikeri road turn left to Kushalnagar. You will pass the golf course and reserve forest. The extra distance is about 45 kms but you save on both time and fuel!
Bus fares from Bangalore (Rs 130 to 150 non deluxe), Mysore (Rs 40 approx regular) Mangalore (Rs 50 regular). Autorickshaws from Kushalnagar charge about Rs. 120
