Industry is the sector your company works in, such as Banking, Media or Oil & Gas. In each of these industries you can have many Functional Areas/departments.

Functional Area is the department you work in. For example, Marketing, Public relations and Finance are various departments found in companies across Industries.

Example: Someone working in the Accounts department in an Accounting firm will have the Accounts as Functional Area and Accounting as Industry. On the other hand, someone working in the Accounts department of a FMCG conglomerate will have Accounts as Functional Area but FMCG as Industry.
