The institute was founded in 1962 by the late Dr. M. S. Ramaiah, an educationist, philanthropist, and infrastructure visionary. Honorary doctorate was presented posthumously to educationist M. S. Ramaiah by India's president Pranab Mukherjee for his contribution to Indian education and healthcare.[16] MSRIT is part of Gokula Education Foundation (GEF) which owns and manages several educational institutions across various streams. M. S. Ramaiah Medical College,[17][18][19] M. S. Ramaiah College of Pharmacy,[20] M. S. Ramaiah College of Law,[21] M.S. Ramaiah Dental College,[22] M. S. Ramaiah College of Nursing,[23] M. S. Ramaiah Polytechnic,[24] M. S. Ramaiah Institute of Management Studies,[25][26] M. S. Ramaiah College of Arts-Commerce-Science,[27] M.S. Ramaiah College of Hotel Management,[28] and M. S. Ramaiah High School are some of the institutes run by the foundation. The Foundation also runs a Multi Speciality Hospital.[29][30] MSRIT was the first institute started by the Gokula Education Foundation.[31] M. R. Seetharam,son of M. S. Ramaiah, currently heads the college management as director.
