Rasiklal M Dhariwal Heart Hospital and Research Center of Ram Mangal Heart Foundation is, one of the Pune s best cardiothoracic surgical centers, founded by Dr Ranjit Jagtap. In November 2021, he successfully operated on a woman with a large chest tumor.
Mediastinal masses are a broad category of tumors and pseudo-tumors that can affect any of the mediastinum s compartments. Neurogenic tumors (20 percent of mediastinal tumours) are the most prevalent, usually found in the posterior mediastinum, followed by thymoma (15-20 percent) in the anterior mediastinum. Surgical excision of mediastinal masses usually results in a positive outcome.
History
A 52-year-old female patient was suffering with chest pain and shortness of breath when she was brought to the hospital.
Observations
They discovered that the patient had a massive mass encompassing more than 60% of the chest cavity and was putting pressure on the heart and lungs after doing X-rays, CT scans, and all pathology reports.
During surgery
After successfully operating the patient, an enormous mass of total 6kg in weight and total 30cm in length was removed from the chest cavity during surgery.
The patient was discharged in good health. The surgery went well. Dr. Ranjit Jagtap and his team did an incredible job, and this case of anterior mediastinal mass excision was one of several they saw in their hospital.
Because this condition is seldom encountered in clinical settings and tends to be asymptomatic until compression symptoms emerge, which leads to mediastinal mass syndrome, there have been few research on big anterior mediastinal masses (MMS). This is a significant challenge in patient care throughout the preoperative period. There aren t many centers with interdisciplinary teams of thoracic surgeons, anesthesiologists, and oncologists to deal with such difficult situations.
Conclusion
In this series, the positive outcome of definitive surgery implies clinical viability and reasonable short-term safety. The successful treatment of this condition required a multidisciplinary approach with sufficient preoperative assessment, intraoperative preparation, and short- and long-term postoperative care.
Ram Mangal Heart Foundation is a complete thoracic surgery center with the ability to manage such patients with positive outcomes.
