What is Trinity (London) Graded Music Examination ?

Trinity College London (TCL) is an international examinations board based in London, England. Trinity College London was founded as the external examinations board of Trinity College of Music (known today as the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance), and began offering examinations in music to external students in 1877.
Trinity College London graded music exams are designed to provide a structured learning framework which evaluates a student’s progress at every level. It’s the Best exam not only for beginners but also for professionals. Music exams equip learners with real-life skills to help them become confident musicians and performers. Trinity exams are internationally recognised, with UCAS points available at the higher grades.
Trinity College London offers graded musical qualifications for musical theory and for performance in singing, piano, electronic keyboards, woodwind instruments and percussion. The grading begins with the Initial Grade, and then are numbered from Grade 1 to Grade 8 in increasing difficulty. Candidates are rated under three categories – the performance of musical pieces, technical work such as scales, and supporting tests such as sight reading and improvisation. Candidates are graded on a scale from 1 to 100, with 60 being the pass mark. Candidates have some flexibility in the choices of pieces and tests prepared for each of these sections.
