A Machine Maintenance Engineer with 1 to 3 years of experience plays a highly hands-on, execution-focused role on the plant floor.
At this stage in your career, the focus is on maximizing machine uptime. Companies look for someone who can respond rapidly to equipment breakdowns, execute preventive maintenance checklists flawlessly, and handle basic mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical troubleshooting.
Here is a targeted Job Description (JD) tailored for a Maintenance Engineer with 1 to 3 years of experience.
Job Title: Machine Maintenance Engineer
Experience Level: 1 to 3 Years
Department: Engineering & Maintenance
Reports To: Maintenance Manager / Plant Engineering Head
Position Purpose :
The Machine Maintenance Engineer will minimize production downtime by executing routine preventive maintenance, troubleshooting sudden machine breakdowns, and ensuring all plant utilities run smoothly. With 1 to 3 years of experience, you will work closely with production teams to diagnose equipment issues rapidly, handle spare parts inventory, and ensure shop-floor machinery operates safely and efficiently.
Key Responsibilities
Breakdown Maintenance: Respond immediately to machine alarms and production floor breakdowns. Diagnose and repair mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and basic electrical faults to restore production quickly.
Preventive Maintenance (PM): Execute daily, weekly, and monthly preventive maintenance schedules according to machine manuals. Perform lubrication, belt tightening, filter replacements, and alignment checks.
Troubleshooting Core Systems:
Mechanical/Hydraulic: Repair or replace pumps, valves, cylinders, seals, gearboxes, and bearings.
Pneumatic: Troubleshoot air compressors, pneumatic lines, actuators, and solenoid valves.
Electrical/Electronic: Identify faulty sensors, limit switches, relays, contactors, and assist senior engineers in diagnosing basic PLC or VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) faults.
Predictive Maintenance Assistance: Conduct basic condition monitoring checks, such as monitoring machine temperatures, unusual vibrations, or abnormal noises, to catch failures before they happen.
Spare Parts Management: Maintain an accurate log of spare parts usage. Identify critical spares required for your assigned lines and coordinate with the stores team to raise purchase requisitions.
Documentation & Logs: Update the Shift Maintenance Logbook or enter data into the CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) or SAP. Document breakdown details, root causes, parts replaced, and total time taken to repair (MTTR).
Safety & 5S: Ensure all maintenance work complies with safety standards, including LOTO (Lock-Out/Tag-Out) procedures before working on any machine. Maintain a clean, tool-organized workshop area using 5S principles.
Required Experience & Qualifications
Education: Diploma or B.E./B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Mechatronics.
Experience: 1 to 3 years of core machine maintenance experience within a manufacturing or production plant (e.g., Automotive, Packaging, Plastics, FMCG, or Heavy Engineering).
Technical Skills:
Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, hydraulic/pneumatic circuits, and basic electrical schematics.
Hands-on experience with standard maintenance workshop tools, measuring instruments (vernier calipers, multimeters), and welding/fitting basics.
Familiarity with major machinery components (motors, pumps, gearboxes, sensors).
